“These are strange times.” You have no doubt heard that sentence several times a day for at least a month now. We all crave a return to normal life, but we all wonder what “normal” will look like.
April in Door County is about rebirth. Buds are just starting to form on cherry trees, and birds are singing in the morning. Although we still get occasionally dusted with snow (and an inch or more is not uncommon), a richer shade of green is starting to show through.
2020 is unlike any other year, and we are all getting oddly accustomed to its uncertainty. But positive signs are showing through. In Door County, we’re setting our sights on the near horizon, when we can again gather together and find new reasons to love Door County.
Cherry Season is Coming
If the photo at the top did its job, you may be thinking about Door County cherries. This is a crop that only Door County can produce, and this year it holds a special significance in our hearts. Life will go on, this too will pass.
We’ll be in full bloom in just a few short weeks, and now is a great time to plan a cherry-picking excursion for your family. But don’t forget, you can always order a taste of Door County, delivered to your door, from many of our great orchards. Door County’s 11 lighthouses are a lesson in maritime history and a unique analog to our current situation. These structures and their dutiful operators were a constant guiding light offering safety to those facing uncertain conditions.
While the start of their operation as attractions this season is uncertain, these buildings are always available for great photo opportunities, and a self-guided lighthouse tour of Door County is a fantastic family activity. Once things return to normal, don’t forget to get your Lighthouse Passport stamped.
